The "Red Vienna" - a tour through the social democratic Vienna

During this tour one will experience the historic "Red Vienna" which was influenced and designed by the social democratic party during the 20th century. For example, the tour will take you to the apartment complexes, the so-called Gemeindebauten - "social housing" - which were built by the social democratic party. A classical Gemeindebau with a community courtyard or one of the oldest complexes - discover the "Red Vienna"!

Sociological Tour to Marienthal

Among the highlights of our sociological tours will be two guided visits of the Marienthal museum in the nearby village of Gramatneusiedl— site of path-breaking research “Die Arbeitslosen von Marienthal” or “Marienthal: the sociography of an unemployed community”, in which Marie Jahoda, Paul Lazarsfeld and Hans Zeisel showed how unemployment destroys individuals and social life. Their findings and their method-mix have inspired a great deal of research, and are still impressive today.

The Paul F. Lazarsfeld Archive – a virtual walkthrough

The Paul F. Lazarsfeld Archive was founded 1980 by Prof. Paul M. Neurath together with Prof. Anton Amann. The archive, situated at the Sociology and Political Science Library in the house of Sociology at the University of Vienna, comprises a nearly complete collection of Lazarsfeld´s papers and books. Together with the scientific legacy of the sociologist Paul M. Neurath (1911-2001) it represents an outstanding source of the history and development of the social sciences and is frequently visited by international students and researchers.

You will be introduced to the Paul F. Lazarsfeld Archive by a short virtual walkthrough and some contextual information.

The Sociology and Political Science Library – library tour

The Sociology and Political Science Library is located at the Institute of Sociology at the University of Vienna. With more than 100.000 books it is one of over 40 special libraries of Vienna University Library providing literature in the fields of sociology, political science, nursing science and science- and technology studies. Moreover the library holds the Paul F. Lazarsfeld Archive with a nearly complete collection of Lazarsfeld´s papers and books and the scientific legacy of sociologist Paul M. Neurath. Within the tour you will be shown the facilities and services of our library.

Main library – guided tour

The history of Vienna University Library has always been closely linked to that of Vienna University. It was founded along with the university in the year 1365, which makes it the oldest university library in the German-speaking area. In 1884, the library followed the university into its new building on Ringstrasse. During the guided tour of library you will hear about its history, have a look at the historic reading room and catch a glimpse of the closed stacks, where more than 2.7 million books of the main library are stored.

Coffeehouse Crawl

Enjoying a Viennese coffee like Melange together with a cake like Sachertorte in one of Vienna's famous coffeehouses around the city, that is a strong Viennese tradition. Join us on a Coffeehous-Crawl to a few of these Kaffeehäuser in the afternoon! Drinking coffee like many famous writers and scientists such as Sigmund Freud, Franz Kafka or Stefan Zweig did before, maybe even together with some background piano music….

Walzing lesson

"Alles Walzer" means "Everybody up to waltz!" and can be heard at every Austrian classical ball in order to open up the dancefloor. But do you know how to waltz in order to join? Come and enjoy a dancing lesson where you learn how to do the traditional Viennese Waltz and swing around the dancefloor!

Signing up is possible for a single person or for two people, joining each other for the dance as a couple (female-male match is not required).

Soccer tournament

As the European Championship of soccer is about to end at the time of the ISA Forum 2016 there will also be a soccer tournament for sociologists. But of course participants from all over the world can take part in it. The tournament will take place in the green heart of Vienna, the Prater, on Tuesday 12th of July. Included is a free drink an there may also be some trophies to win.

European Championship - Public Viewing

Beachvolleyball tournament

Summer vibes in Vienna always include the feeling of being on holiday. And what better can you do than play beachvolleyball and jump into the cold and refreshing water of the Danube afterwards to relax after a stressfull day at the conference? Therefore we meet at the Dragonerhäufl, a very chilly spot at the "Alte Donau" which is a branch of the Danube.

This tour introduces some of the most significant historical sites in Vienna. On the Ringstrasse you will see the State Opera House, the magnificent Museum of Fine Arts, which houses world-famous art treasures of the Habsburgs, the Natural History Museum, the Museumsquartier, the Hofburg (the former Habsburg winter residence), the Parliament, City Hall and the Burgtheater. The highlight of the tour is a visit to the showrooms of Schönbrunn Palace, once the summer residence of the Habsburg family and home to Queen Maria Theresia. The Vienna Residence Orchestra

The Vienna Residence Orchestra, a Viennese chamber orchestra with a long tradition, was founded to perform the music of the “Wiener Klassik” in its purest form. In 1991 the orchestra was appointed the official representative of the City of Vienna for the festivities commemorating the bicentenary of Mozart’s death, and has also performed a number of concerts at the “Vienna International Festival.” One of the best orchestras of Vienna’s musical world will take you on a journey back to the days of Imperial Vienna.
